In 1961 Brough was returning to Key West from gunnery practice in Puerto
Rico, when early in the morning shortly after daybreak our lookouts on the
bridge spotted a small boat adrift about 50 miles S.E. of Key West. Brough
pulled along side and found 5 Cubans on board their small boat which was
probably around 15 ft. in length. They had been adrift for 3 days and had
very little food or water. We helped them aboard the Brough let them get a
shower and fixed them a big breakfast in the mess decks. I took this
picture of the 5 Cubans with one of our crew who spoke Cuban and could
interpret, he is the one kneeling in the center of the picture. The Cubans
were given 24 hrs to get out of Cuba or be shot by Castro's military. We
turned the Cubans over to the immigration authorities when we docked at
the Key West Naval Annex.
