BROUGH Mascot, "WREN": The USS BROUGH while waiting in Londonderry, Ireland until another fleet of ships were ready to return to the states. While docked, a member of the crew picked up a small pup roaming about the dock. He brought her aboard and we
adopted her as a mascot. We named her "WREN" - the acronym given to British Navy females. On her first trip to the states she lost her footing when the ship rolled and many times she almost went overboard. In time she managed to get her footing and became a
real sailor. When ever we were called to General Quarters, whether a drill or for real, Wren would get behind the hatch cover leading to the engine room. It became her favorite station Eventually, Wren had to leave us in 1945 on a Medical discharge. A crewman from Peabody, MA took her to his home to raise her family.

Every man on that ship loved the animal, and we all hoped she would be happy with the
crewman's home. By, James Surette, CQM, Article from Dan Cooley Collection
