CONTACT

When Italy surrendered in World War II several of their warships were divided between the Allies. . Among the ships the U.S. Navy received was a Submarine. This Sub was used by the Anti-Submarine Warfare Group in training sessions at sea. In December of 1944 the Brough was in the Casco Bay area Sonar searching for the Sub. Sonar contact was made and the Brough proceeded to make a practice run on the Sub. Suddenly an unceasing flow of Morse Code was received through the Sonar equipment. Morse Code was not a requirement for Sonar Operators, so a Signalman was called in to read the message. The message was that the Sub was having an emergency and needed to surface immediately, but was afraid the Brough would ram them. The Brough aborted the run and the Sub surfaced safely. Starting the next day Sonar Operators began to learn Morse Code.
